Wearable Smart Technology Rules/Guidance

Dear District 207 Parents and Students,

We recognize that some of our students own and want to use wearable smart technology. However, as the use of this technology continues to grow in our schools, it is important that all students and families understand the guidelines in place to protect the privacy, safety, and learning environment of everyone in our community.

The use of wearable smart technology, including but not limited to Meta Glasses, is subject to the following restrictions based upon Student Handbook, Section 6.30Student Handbook, Section 6.80; and/or Board Policy 7:190. Violating these rules will be subject to disciplinary procedures and due process.

Photos: Using wearable technology, or any other technology, to take photographs or record video/audio in the educational environment and/or record video and/or audio in locker rooms, restrooms, or private offices is strictly prohibited.

Non-Consensual Recording: Recording any student or staff member without their permission is prohibited. This includes “vlogging” in hallways or classrooms.

Academic Dishonesty: Using wearable technology during any test, quiz, or formal assessment is prohibited. Using these devices to capture test content or communicate with outside parties is a violation of the Academic Integrity policy.

It is also important to know that based upon Illinois law, it is illegal to record private conversations without the consent of all parties involved. Therefore, recording audio in private areas like inside schools violate the rules outlined in the student handbook, but might also constitute a felony-level eavesdropping offense.

Please talk with your student about the appropriate use of wearable technology so that we can work together to avoid consequences for students. Reach out to the principal’s office at your school if you have questions.
