Parents, some helpful hints from the Attendance Office to help you and your student avoid any unnecessary confusion and delays when dealing with absences.
To Contact the Attendance Office, please call 847-692-8321:
• The Attendance Office is open each school day from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• An answering system available all night and other hours the office is not open.
• For your message, please clearly state your student’s name, ID number, reason for absence, date of absence, and caller’s identity.
Absences can only be authorized if:
1. A call is received from parent/guardian registered with school.
2. A call is received within time allotted (by 2:00 p.m. the day following the absence).
To Authorize Early Departure from School
• A parent or guardian contacts the Attendance Office as early as possible on that day or the day before.
• A student reports to the Attendance Office upon arriving to school to pick-up a pass for release from school.
Excused Absences
An excused absence can be defined as, but is not limited to:
- Medical appointment verified by a medical note.
- Testing and assessment.
- High school shadow day.
- Illness confirmed by a medical note (after two days out of school before nine unexcused absences, one day
after nine unexcused days). - Observance of a religious holiday.
- Illness confirmed by a note from a parent/guardian (parent/guardian verified absences may not be excused if total absences are in excess of nine unexcused days per year).
- Court appearance demanded by official summons or subpoena verified by court.
- Funeral (confirmed with a parent/guardian note).
- School sponsored activities, i.e. field trips, athletic events or scholastic competitions.
- Extenuating circumstances that have been approved by administration.
- Mental health.
Unexcused Absences
An unexcused absence can be defined as, but is not limited to:
1. Any absence that is not confirmed with a parental/guardian, medical staff, or within the two day grace period.
2. Truancy (absence from school without verification from the parent).
3. An illness which lasts for more than two consecutive days that is not verified by a medical note.
4. Vacation days taken with family (credit will be given if student meets the expectation of the building principal and classroom teachers).
5. Personal reasons or business.
6. Failure to attend because of transportation problems, unless transported by school bus.
7. Non-school sponsored sports activities or events.
