Andrew Greene from Maine East was honored for his remarkable leadership, passion for education and his ability to elevate any learning environment.

The following information was written about Andrew Greene as a part of the nomination by Maine East principal Dr. Melissa A. Pikul.

ANDREW GREENE, MAINE EAST

I am writing to celebrate the exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and character of Andrew Greene, a graduating senior whose impact on our school community has been both deeply positive.

Andrew’s academic journey reflects the very best of what we hope to cultivate in District 207 students: curiosity, discipline, and a genuine love of learning. He describes his experience in advanced coursework as some of the most exciting learning he has done in high school. Building on a strong foundation in mathematics, Andrew has developed into a focused, reflective learner. His impressive resume is evidence of his commitment to learning with success in 10 AP courses and a perfect ACT score!

That academic strength is matched by remarkable leadership. Andrew has been a cornerstone of our Debate program, serving as Varsity Captain, a Varsity Debater, and President of the NSDA Chapter, while also giving back as a debate judge. His experience reflects not only competitive success which includes participation at Nationals, but also the way he elevates others by directing meetings, training and mentoring novice debaters, and helping sustain a strong team culture.

Andrew’s leadership extends beyond debate. He has demonstrated commitment and excellence as a student-athlete, serving as a Varsity Captain in Golf, earning All-Conference recognition, and qualifying for sectionals individually. He has also contributed through baseball and supported his team through fundraising efforts that strengthened the program. In academics outside the classroom, Andrew’s work with the Math Team reflects both talent and perseverance, including state-level participation and repeated qualifications.

Just as importantly, Andrew has invested his time in service and the school community. Through Lyceum, he participated in meaningful volunteer work including a memorable service trip to Detroit that he describes as fun and rewarding, even when unexpected challenges arose. As a National Honor Society member and group leader, he has also contributed significant service and helped others find meaningful ways to give back.

Andrew’s teachers were eager to share how his excellence influences their classes.  Mr. Mark Dobner, Calculus teacher shared, “Andrew is a fantastic student, who is a deep thinker and a formidable problem-solver. He can regularly be counted on to elevate the learning environment through his thoughtful comments and questions as well as his willingness to help others. Whether it’s his intellectual prowess, helpful attitude, or impeccable character, Andrew truly represents what is best at our high school.”

Ms. Lizzie Macarthur, Statistics teacher shared, “Andrew’s genuine curiosity and desire to understand mathematics made him a huge asset to my AP Statistics class his sophomore year.  He contributed so much to class discussions, to group work, and the overall atmosphere of the class.  He was always willing to talk things out with his fellow classmates.  In addition to all his academic contributions, Andrew is just a really nice guy and fun to have around.”

Mr. Dave Schultz, Physics teacher shared, “Andrew is doing an outstanding job in AP Physics C this year!  He quickly grasps tough concepts and has great math chops.  Andrew also elevates class discussions on a daily basis with incisive comments and questions.  And, he has an oddly deep knowledge of pre-2000 movies and music!”

Mr. Jan Wieczorek, Physics teacher shared, “Andrew was a model student in AP Physics 1. He worked eagerly and diligently on tough problems, and helped set an example of what it means to have your mind on physics. He asked questions in class to help everyone further their learning, and overall contributed to a positive learning environment.”

Mr. Greg Reuhs, Lyceum sponsor shared, “I’ve been working with Andrew these last two years as a member of the Lyceum program. He’s a joy to work with, engaging with the work seriously and thoughtfully. During our service proposal process he and his team designed a plan that looked to build better connections with the ML community at Maine East. This summer on our service trip to Detroit, he dove into any task and helped wherever he could. He’s not only a fantastic student, but also a fantastic person! He’s also a heck of a ping-pong player!”

Looking ahead, Andrew hopes to pursue physics in college, and he is also exploring the intersection of STEM and the professional world through an interest in patent law. This career interest reflects both his intellectual ambition and his desire to apply science in practical, high-impact ways. He also offers thoughtful advice to younger students: pursue your passions, but try opportunities broadly because growth often comes from discovering something unexpected.

Andrew Greene represents the kind of student leader we are proud to graduate from District 207: academically driven, service-minded, and committed to strengthening every team and community he joins.
