Welcome to the World Language Department

At Maine East, we believe that learning another language is more than a classroom experience — it’s an invitation to connect with the world. With students and families representing cultures from around the globe, our program celebrates the richness of language and diversity that defines our community. The study of world languages enriches academic growth, intercultural understanding, and future career readiness.

Studying a world language helps students:

  • Develop skills that open doors to travel, careers, and cultural exchange
  • Gain deeper understanding of their own identity and culture
  • Strengthen cognitive and communication skills that enhance academic success

Our Program

Students can study French, Spanish, or Assyrian, with opportunities to advance through a full four-year sequence. A four-year commitment is strongly encouraged for achieving fluency and cultural proficiency. In advanced levels, students may earn college credit through Dual Credit or Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Accelerated options are also available.

Our department emphasizes:

  • Authentic communication across the four language domains — listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • Cultural competency through exploration of global perspectives and real-world applications
  • Student growth and reflection through formative and summative assessments designed for mastery

Why Study a World Language?

  • Gain a global perspective that enriches all areas of study
  • Build skills valued by universities and employers
  • Develop confidence and empathy through intercultural communication
  • Join a supportive community of learners preparing to thrive in a connected world
