The Maine Township High School District 207 Educational Foundation will host its ninth annual Benefit Dinner, “The Maine Event ,” on Thursday, April 6, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Café La Cave, 2777 Mannheim Road in Des Plaines. The benefit dinner is the major fundraising event for the volunteer nonprofit organization, which provides monetary support for enhanced and innovative learning experiences for students attending the three Maine Township District 207 high schools—Maine East, Maine West, and Maine South.
A silent auction will be enjoyed by attendees, along with a special raffle open to everyone for a two-night stay at the Osthoff Resort on Lake Elkhart in Wisconsin. Emcees will be Cathy Glunz, Foundation Chair; Phil Berquist, Foundation Treasurer; and Dr. Rose Garlasco, recently retired from Maine West. Entertainment will be provided by the Maine East Jazz Band. Students from the Maine South Constitution Team, a recipient of generous Foundation grants, will speak on the challenges faced by our democracy in the 21st Century, especially making our political system more understandable to the average citizen.
Through charitable donations from community members, retired teachers, current staff, alumni, parents, local businesses and civic groups, as well as district vendors to our annual benefit, the District 207 Educational Foundation was able in 2016 to distribute almost $20,000 to teachers who applied for grants designed to extend, enhance, and enrich the learning experiences of their students. This past year, the Foundation helped fund a wide range of programs for Maine students, from an African dance workshop, to a greenhouse, to national competitions across the country. In addition, those who attended the benefit last year donated $1,200 to pay for school physicals for low-income students through the School Based Health Center, a long-term collaboration between District 207 and Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.
The Foundation urges alumni, retired teachers, parents, and community members to join friends and neighbors at the Benefit Dinner this year. Tickets to “The Maine Event” are $60 and can be purchased online at the Foundation’s website. For anyone who is interested but cannot attend, donations to the District 207 Educational Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization, may also be made on the website, as well as purchasing tickets for the Osthoff Resort raffle .
